Breastfeeding & Lactation Support
Nourishing and bonding with your baby are just some of the many benefits of breastfeeding. If you need help getting breastfeeding off to a good start or have any other of the many questions both new and experienced mothers have about breastfeeding a baby, we are here to help. Our office is a comfortable and private place to seek counseling and general breastfeeding support.
Some of the many issues women seek support for lactation or breastfeeding are:
- experiencing pain while nursing
- evaluation of latch
- low or excessive milk production
- learning how to use your breastpump or other accessories
- returning to work/leaving your breastfeeding baby
- questions about weaning
- starting solids
Using breastfeeding counseling in addition to your pediatrician or other primary care doctor:
With the many topics primary care providers must keep up on, information provided about breastfeeding infants and toddlers can be a little outdated, therefore seeking additional information outside of your PCP can clarify the potential for misinformation. If you are unsure of any breastfeeding or other feeding advice given by your PCP, feel free to call and discuss your concerns. If necessary, I am happy to discuss concerns with your child's doctor as well.
Some of the misinformation you may hear (this is only a short list, please don't hesitate to call if you are unsure of any advice you receive about breastfeeding):
- You should schedule your baby's feedings
- If you have sore nipples, discontinue breastfeeding for a few days until they heal
- A bottle of formula now and then won't hurt anything
- Nipple shields can be used for any case of sore nipples
- Infants should start rice cereal by 3-4 months old
- And many more
